sign of the apocalypse
The governor of South Dakota (Mike Rounds, a Republican) says that he is prepared and is indeed "morally obligated" to sign legislation to ban abortion in the state. It's likely to happen, as legislation which made abortion illegal -- except in situations when the woman's life or a "major bodily function" was put at risk -- made its way through both houses of the state legislature last year. It didn't go any further than that because Rounds, despite supporting the legislation, vetoed it on a technicality.
Anyway, Rounds thinks the timing is perfect, as a challenge to the law could make its way to the Supreme Court and potentially overturn Roe v. Wade. It's a good thing that the Democratic Party decided recently that maybe they need to downplay abortion rights as being an integral element of the party's platform (screw you, Nancy Pelosi).
