This is a film (Lemonade) about people in the ad agency world who lost their jobs and found something better on the other side, including their happiness and an unexpected new sense of self worth.
Yeah, I work in the industry. Don't read too much into it. Read THIS into it. If you're not doing what you want to be doing right this very minute, you might want to reconsider.
I'm getting this out there for a Twitter friend, the film's writer and co-executive producer and former agency ACD. Watch it. He's a good man, that Eric Proulx (@eproulx) and I think he might be doing what he was meant to be doing all along.
Thanks for sharing that. It certainly shows how what is perceived as a bad event in life can turn into a life changing event and help to create a better - and more fulfilling life.

That does look interesting. People who have never went through it have no idea just how traumatic it can be.
ReplyDeleteMy husband came into his job one morning after 3 years to his boss asking to speak with him. When he asked "Hey can I just set my lunch on desk?" he was awarded the response "There's no need, it's your last day." He definitely never saw it coming.
The psychological anguish that he went through over the next 7 months of being unemployed was gut wrenching to watch. But right at the end of his rope, he landed a new gig in a totally different industry making more money and working in a much more professional environment.
I'll be looking forward to this release.

ReplyDeleteI spent the 15 of 17 years as a freelancer, but have been a full-time denizen of the corporate world for the past ten, so I can see both sides of this story; from the exhilaration of realizing you're now your own boss, to the abject terror of realizing you're now on your own.

thank you so much for this. i'm a 19 year old media student from singapore and for the last 3 years have been working so hard to grasp some sort of a foothold in the ever changing media industry. everyday, my fear is that i'd go out there into the big bad ugly world and lose myself even more. this 2 min and 17 second clip really hit so close to home.
ReplyDeletei've watched my mum slog 30+ years for an agency that ultimately stabbed her in the back. but after she left, it's like a whole new world has opened up for her and for the first time in years she's doing things for herself and actually has time for us, her children.
sometimes i wonder if things will work out in the future, but now i know that if everything doesn't, it's most important to pursue passions and be happy.

Love this! I've been laid off two times in my career and both times it was a blessing in disguise. But of course you never see it that way until later on.
ReplyDeletei have been questioning my decision to change careers, afraid to let go of what i know in order to try something that is risky financially, but possibly very fulfilling. Not finding a job was the initial push, but if others can do it, maybe i can scrounge up the confidence

ReplyDeleteNice. I was laid off two months ago, and I've used the time to promote my first book. I have a strong faith that this is just God's way of helping me leave a job I hated and "follow my bliss" [I think that sounds goofy but it's the only phrase that came to mind.]
ReplyDeleteLoved your post about John Hughes. I was a young adult in the 80's, not a teen, but I could still identify with his films and loved them all.
Maybe the publicity you've gotten is his final gift to you. Use it well. [Sounds like you already have!]

funny, i just did the same for my ad-friend with this film.
ReplyDeleteThis might sound indulgent but it's always a good rule to do SOMETHING you love even while working a 9-5 job. And if you don't have time to pursue other avenues while you're working your full time job, then the job is sucking too much from you. Always keep a few avenues open.
